Six things we will never do

We know what “educational app” usually means. We are the opposite of that.

This list is in our Terms. If we ever break one, fire us – and tell the press.

NO
Ads shown to your kid.Ever. Not “educational” ads, not sponsored lessons, not a single pixel of branding from another company.
NO
Data sold or rented.Your child's work is not a product. It never moves beyond the teachers and schools you already trust.
NO
Model training on student work.Nothing your kid writes trains anyone's AI. That is a contractual commitment, not a preference.
NO
Streak-panic dark patterns. We won't guilt-trip your kid into studying at bedtime. Streak freezes are free and plentiful.
NO
Public leaderboards with real names.Weekly leagues show the top 10 only – anonymous, reshuffled every Monday. No classroom comparisons. Ever.

Sat
Lazy morning

You cook pancakes together.

You ask: “Is 3/4 cup more than 5/8?” She explains it using pizza. That's the whole point.

🥞 real life
Our screen-time pledge

Short, focused practice.
Zero guilt loops.

Coursim is a study tool, not an entertainment app. We looked at every “engagement” metric addictive apps optimize for, and we built against them. No streak panic, no push notifications at bedtime, no infinite scroll – kids come when a teacher assigns, and leave when they're done.

Coursim is pre-launch. We'll publish honest usage data once we have it.

  • No streak panic. Free, plentiful streak freezes. Missing a day is fine.
  • No push at bedtime. 🌙 quiet hours
  • No infinite scroll. ↓ 71% vs TikTok for 13-yr-olds
  • No leaderboard shame. Longer sessions happen – for a big test, for a student who loves a subject. We don't punish either.

💚 Sage flagged Ms. Torres: “Ava was frustrated but stayed. Breakthrough on L3.”
Meet Sage, the tutor

She's kind. She's relentless. She never gives the answer.

Rule #1No final answers.Sage scaffolds with questions, hints, and different explanations. Your kid always does the math.
Rule #2Kindness first.Frustration is normal. Sage never shames, never gives up, never gets sarcastic.
Rule #3Teacher always wins. After 5 minutes of struggle, Sage flags the teacher. Humans make the big calls.
Rule #4No web. No memory across kids.Sage can't browse. Sage can't know about other students. Sage is a lesson-and-this-kid tutor only.
The things parents actually ask us

Fair questions. Straight answers.

No jargon, no legalese. (We have legalese too – it's in the Trust Center.)

Will this replace my kid's teacher?

No – that's not what Coursim is for. We build the boring parts of teaching (writing worksheets, grading practice, tracking 28 kids at once) so teachers can do the parts only a human can: noticing when your kid is off, sitting with them, asking the good follow-up question. Every Coursim lesson is teacher-approved before your child sees it.

How much can I see about what my child is doing?

The Friday digest from the teacher is the parent view – one short note, written by the teacher, auto-translated to your preferred language, with one specific thing you can do at home. We don't build a separate parent dashboard, because research says hovering parents stress kids. If you want more detail, the Friday note always includes the teacher's email – ask them directly.

My child has an IEP. Is this accessible?

Yes. Read-aloud is on by default. Large text, dyslexia-friendly font, simplified language, extended time, and screen-reader support are one click each – no 504 process needed. We're WCAG 2.2 AA conformant and audit every release with students who use assistive tech. Seeour accessibility statement.

What if my kid doesn't speak English at home?

Coursim, the digests, and Sage's responses all work in 40+ languages. PS 34 in Brooklyn runs us in Spanish, Mandarin, and Bangla side-by-side, on the same class roster. Grandparents who read only Tagalog get the Friday note in Tagalog.

Is my child being compared to other kids?

Only in the weekly league – and only the top 10 are visible, anonymous, reshuffled every Monday. If your kid isn't in the top 10, they simply don't see a ranking at all – no “you're #47” shame. Classmates are never grouped together in a league either. That's a design rule we won't give up.

How do I cancel / delete everything?

Your school is the data controller, so they handle account removal. For personal data under GDPR/CCPA, emailprivacy@coursim.co– we purge within 30 days. If your school leaves Coursim, every student's data is deleted from our systems within 30 days of contract end, no retention “for analytics.” Receipt emailed to the district.

My kid hates math. Will this make it worse?

Honestly? It depends on the kid. About 60% of families tell us math got easier because the explanations finally clicked. About 30% tell us it got more bearable because the 1:1 patience of Sage beats a loud classroom. About 10% of kids are just done with math, and no app fixes that – those kids need a human conversation, and we tell teachers exactly that.

Your kid deserves a learning tool you don't have to apologize for.

Coursim is included for families when their school runs it – no extra cost to you. Ask your teacher if they're on Coursim, or send them a link.
