How Coursim meets the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
School official designation
Coursim operates as a "school official" with "legitimate educational interests" as defined under FERPA, 34 CFR § 99.31(a)(1). When schools and districts use Coursim, we are acting under their direct control with respect to the use and maintenance of personally identifiable information from education records.
Directory information
Coursim does not disclose directory information about students to third parties. We will honor opt-out requests forwarded from a school district.
Records access
Parents and eligible students retain all rights under FERPA to inspect and review education records. Coursim will cooperate with schools to make records available upon valid request, typically within 15 business days.
Retention and deletion
Student education records are retained only as long as needed to provide the Service, or as required by the customer's record retention schedule. Upon contract termination, all student data is returned to the school and permanently deleted from Coursim systems within 30 days.
